CHANGES FOR PROVINCIAL TEAMS

NOTE: This is a quick review of the changes that will be in effect for 2006-2007 season. All bench staff should read the O.R.A. Operating Manual - Games & Tournaments Section for complete info.

NOTE: All teams must support the O.R.A. sponsors. Hudson Travel is responsible to book rooms for all teams at both events for 2007. The Region G&T Co-ordinator will ensure that they are aware of what teams will be contacting them.

Provincial Petite

For several years now all Provincial teams in Petite are classified as Provincial Petite. They are not to be referred to as "A" or "AA". The O.R.A. Games & Tournaments committee reviews the Petite teams after the January 8th deadline (extended for 2007 to January 15th to include the Whitby tournament). It is imperative that all teams ensure that their Region G&T has any pertinent information on their team as well as others.

All teams assigned, as "AA" at that time will attend the Provincials in Nepean. As many "A" teams as possible will be sent to the Provincials in Chatham.

Tween/Junior/Belle/Open "AA"

Although the new format was to begin for the 2008 Provincials, Nepean has been able to get enough ice to allow for the new format of max. 10 teams.

The Host team and 1 Rep per Region will be the first teams to be selected and then Wild Cards will be chosen to fill the remaining spots. Each region has the right to decide how their rep will be chosen.

All team stats from O.R.A. sanctioned tournaments will be posted after each event on the O.R.A. website. It is the team's responsibility to confirm and if there are any discrepancies contact your Regional G&T Co-ordinator immediately. Deadline for "AA" results is Feb. 7th, 2007.

Any out of province games against another O.R.A. team must be submitted immediately to the Regional G&T Co-ordinator.

These stats will be used for Wild Card selection, in the formula presented which takes into account the results of O.R.A. events attended and whether in region or out. If you have any questions contact your Region G&T Co-ordinator.

Wild Card Applications have been eliminated. The region will place a check box on their Intent to Proceed to Provincials for teams to show their wish to be considered in the Wild Card Selection.

Petite/Tween/Junior/Belle/Open "A"

Although the new format was to begin for the 2008 Provincials, Chatham has been able to confirm enough ice to allow the maximum 10 teams per division.

The Host team and 1 Rep per Region will be the first teams to be selected and then Wild Cards will be chosen to fill the remaining spots. Each region has the right to decide how their rep will be chosen.

All team stats from O.R.A. sanctioned tournaments will be posted after each event on the O.R.A. website. It is the team's responsibility to confirm and if there are any discrepancies contact your Regional G&T Co-ordinator immediately.. Deadline for "A" results is Feb. 21st, 2007.

Wild Card Ranking Framework

Ranking Formula based on:

  1. Team Performance
    1. Winning % in Sanctioned events
      1. Points earned divided by total points available (2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie).
      2. Team performance during sanctioned events is a simple objective measure that directly relates to the competitive level of the team.
  1. Team Exposure
    1. Ensures team performance score is representative of their ranking against most teams in Ontario and supports growth of the sport through more tournaments and increase revenue in local associations
    2. Team exposure is determined by averaging the number of Ontario tournaments entered factored by 4 plus the number of Ontario out of region tournaments entered factored by 2.

((Total Tournaments Entered/4)+(Total Out of Region Tournaments/2)/2)

  1. Final Score for Ranking = Team Performance X Team Exposure
    1. Final Score adjusts the Team performance value depending upon the exposure.

Examples:

Team A enters 4 Ontario tournaments 3 out of their home region. In these tournaments they played 20 games with a record of 16 wins, 1 tie and 3 losses.

Team Performance will be:

Number of points earned (32 for 16 wins and 1 for a tie ) 33 divided by number of points available (20 games @2 points per game) 40 = .825

Team Exposure will be average of:

Total tournaments entered 4 divided by 4 = 1

plus

Total out of region tournaments 3 divided by 2 = 1.5

    Average (1 + 1.5)/2 = 1.25

Final Score for Ranking will be

    Team Performance .825 times Team Exposure 1.25 = 1.03125

Team A enters 4 Ontario tournaments 1 out of their home region.

    Total tournaments entered 4 divided by 4 = 1

    plus

Total out of region tournaments 1 divided by 2 = .5

      Average (1 + .5)/2 = .75

Final Score for Ranking will be

      Team Performance .825 times Team Exposure .75 = 0.61875

      1. How does a team apply for a Wild Card position?

Wild Card applications will be included on the Region Intent to Proceed to Provincials Form. Contact your Region G&T Co-ordinator for the deadline for your region.

      2. Do league games qualify for Wild Card stats?

Only tournament games between ORA teams who are registered in the same division and level will be counted.

      3. Does a Quebec tournament qualify as an Out-of-Region tournament?

Out of Region refers only to tournaments held inside Ontario, but not in the region of the team in question.

      4. Do any Quebec tournament games count for stats?

Out-of-Province tournament games count if played against another Ontario team registered in the same division and level with O.R.A.

      5. How many tournaments must my team attend?

Every team applying to attend Provincials must attend 2 O.R.A. Sanctioned tournaments; one of these must be out-of-region; however both can be.

      6. How does G&T get results from the tournaments?

Each O.R.A. tournament host must submit their results within 5 days to the region G&T Co-ordinator.

      7. How does G&T get results from the out-of-province games that count?

Both teams are required to submit these results to their G&T Co-ordinator.

      8. Who ensures that the stats are correct?

Coaches are required to verify the correct postings for tournament results and to check that ranking statistics on the O.R.A website to ensure accuracy. Contact the Region G&T Co-ordinator if there are any errors.

      9. How do we know what tournaments qualify for using stats?

Tournaments completed by the deadlines qualify. For 2007 "A" that date is Feb. 21st and for "AA" it is Feb. 7th.

      10. How will Petite "A" stats be compiled?

Once the division of "A" and "AA" is made in January, the Petite "A" results will be posted using only tournament games between the teams in that group (will not include "AA" team games).

      11. Do the top ten automatically go to Provincials?

The Regions have a rep and the host is allowed a team in each division. Any other openings will be filled with the Wild Cards. A confirmed team may be further down in the rankings i.e. if the Host team is #13 in the rankings then only 9 teams from the top would be attending.

      12. How does my team know if they received a Wild Card?

Rankings will be shown in alphabetical order until the deadline. At that time the rankings will be verified and sorted by ranking. Wild Card Spots will be noted. G&T will then notify their teams of the final rankings and the Wild Card selections.
