The Southern Region AAA team travelled to London for the season’s first AAA Challenge Cup and came away with a gold medal.
The team finished round robin play in 2nd place with a 3-2 record. Impressive 6-3 and 6-4 wins over Eastern and Western highlighted the opening day on Friday. After losing the first game on Saturday 8-4 to United, the Southern team bounced back with a 5-0 win over Central. Round robin play concluded on Sunday morning with a 5-4 loss to Northeast.
In the final on Sunday afternoon, the Southern team prevailed in an exciting back-and-forth affair 6-5 over a very game United squad. After controlling the majority of the play in the first period, Southern held a 3-1 lead on goals from Laura Soper, Jada Laliberte, and Liza Knill. The United team pushed back in the 2nd period and went ahead 5-4 with 8:54 to play. After Soper and Knill scored 30 second apart, Southern skillfully controlled the ring for much of the final 6 minutes to seal the victory.
The next AAA Challenge Cup will be held in Richmond Hill, Newmarket, and Markham on December 8-10.
